Objective technical analysis of tax regulations, wealth management, and legal vehicles to help you make informed financial decisions and optimize your taxes with complete rigor.
Every April, the Tax Agency opens the income tax filing season and millions of Spaniards log into the Renta WEB application with the goal of clicking “Confirm Draft” as quickly as possible. It’s a convenience trap: the Tax Agency’s draft contains your known income, but it almost never includes all the deductions you are legitimately entitled to.
Accepting the draft without checking key boxes costs each taxpayer hundreds of euros on average. The tax authorities have the data submitted to them by banks, companies, and notaries, but they ignore personal circumstances, deductible family expenses, and the biggest source of tax savings: regional deductions.
1. The major deductions the Tax Agency tends to “forget” in the draft
A) Regional Deductions: The great gold mine
The national draft automatically calculates your general circumstances, but it systematically leaves the regional deductions section blank because it requires the taxpayer themselves to certify that they meet the income and residency requirements. Among the most common are:
- Primary residence rental: Many regions (Madrid, Catalonia, Galicia, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community, among others) allow you to deduct between 10% and 30% of the rent paid to the landlord if you are under 35 or 36 years old, or subject to certain income limits.
- Education and childcare expenses: Deductions for the purchase of textbooks, school supplies, uniforms, or extracurricular language classes.
- Birth or adoption of children: Amounts ranging from €300 to more than €1,500 depending on the region and the birth order of the child born during the tax year.
- Investment in home energy efficiency: Installation of solar thermal/photovoltaic panels or replacement of windows with a verified improvement in the energy performance certificate.
B) Deductible work-related expenses that don’t appear by default
- Union and political party dues: Dues paid to unions are deducted directly from gross earned income (they can represent between €30 and €60 in real savings).
- Mandatory professional associations: If you belong to a professional association that is mandatory for carrying out your salaried job (doctors, pharmacists, architects, lawyers), you can deduct up to €500 per year in dues.
- Legal defense costs related to employment: Up to €300 per year for lawyers’ and court agents’ fees in disputes against your employer over dismissal or wage claims.
C) Donations and cultural patronage
Regular contributions to NGOs, the Red Cross, Cáritas, or medical research foundations qualify for a 80% deduction on the first €250 donated and between 40% and 45% on the remainder. A €100 donation actually costs you only €20 out of your own pocket once the tax return is applied.
2. Individual vs. Joint Filing: Always run both simulations
If you are legally married, the Renta WEB program lets you switch with a single click between each spouse’s individual filing and the joint return. The general rule is clear:
- If both spouses work with average salaries: Individual filing is almost always more advantageous, since each one enjoys their own personal tax-free allowance of €5,550.
- If one of the spouses has no income or very low income: Joint filing is usually the winner thanks to the €3,400 joint-taxation reduction added to the taxable base.
3. A 7-point checklist before signing and filing
| Point to Review | What to Check | Typical Financial Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Rental deduction | Landlord’s tax ID and deposit lodged with an official body | Savings of €300 to €1,200 |
| 2. Children and family | Births, disability, or shared custody | Savings of €400 to €1,500 |
| 3. Regional deductions | Explicitly enter the regional annex for your area | Savings of €100 to €800 |
| 4. Union / professional association dues | Manually fill in the work-expense boxes | Savings of €40 to €200 |
| 5. NGO donations | Verify that the tax certificates are included | Refund of up to 80% |
| 6. Mortgages taken out before 2013 | Deduction for the purchase of a primary residence (15% up to €9,040) | Up to €1,356 per filer |
| 7. Pension plans | Individual contributions (max. €1,500) or employment-based (up to €8,500) | Direct reduction of the taxable base |
Did you accidentally file the draft without reviewing these boxes in previous years? The law grants you up to 4 years back to file a request to amend your self-assessment and claim from the Tax Agency the refund of the money that was rightfully yours.
“Spending 30 minutes thoroughly reviewing your income tax return isn’t a waste of time: it’s the best-paid hour of work of your entire year.”
